Luis Gutiérrez, the wine critic for the prestigious publication Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) and the tasting lead for Spanish wines, has rated three wines from the winery.
For the Abadal Nuat 2021, which received 92 points, he highlights its origin: a single vineyard planted in 1948. Made primarily from picapoll blanc, as well as macabeu and sumoll blanc de noirs, the critic notes “a creamy nose with hints of spice, smoke and a lactic twist. It shows ripeness and a medium-bodied palate with some chalkiness”.
Also receiving 92 points, the Abadal Arboset 2021 stands out for the grape varieties used: mandó, picapoll, and sumoll (which make up around 60% of the blend), along with seven local varieties (punxó fort, cap pelat, cua de moltó, malvasia de Manresa, pansera, fumat, and cap negre). Regarding the winemaking process, Gutiérrez notes that “all the varieties ferment together with indigenous yeasts in a stone lagar in the middle of the vineyard, and 60% of the wine matured in amphorae and the rest in used 500-liter barrels for one year.” In the tasting, the wine shows “a darker nose with black fruit and abundant dark spices, a little earthier with a rustic twist. A medium-bodied palate and fine tannins, keeping the freshness and balance.”
Finally, the Abadal Mandó 2022 receives 91 points. Gutiérrez highlights “a pale color and a delicate nose with notes of red berries intermixed with spices from the oak. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and reveals fine tannins”.
