Decanter magazine has just published, in its July issue, the results of a blind tasting of Catalan white wines. Out of the 174 wines tasted, Abadal Nuat 2022 was one of the highest rated, receiving a score of 95 points.
With this rating, the wine is classified as “outstanding,” a category reserved for wines scoring between 95 and 97 points. Only 7 out of the 174 wines tasted achieved this top score, and Abadal Nuat is one of them.
The article, written by editor Inés Salpico, presents the scores given by three wine professionals: Luis Gámiz, Andrew Johnson, and Pierre Mansour. Of Abadal Nuat, they highlight its “crystalline purity. Fine, elegant and stylish. A pristinely made wine. No excessive, just poised and refined.”
The critics emphasize that “the tasting revealed white wines of great quality, not only from Penedès, but also from other regions.” They highlight, for example, the DO Pla de Bages, which ranks at the top of the list alongside denominations such as Priorat, Montsant, and Penedès.
They also underscore “the great individuality of the best wines, especially those made with local grape varieties,” including forcada, malvasia de Sitges, pansa blanca, parellada, and picapoll: “an indigenous viticultural wealth being newly appreciated and reinterpreted by producers across Catalonia”.
