Abadal celebrated the 30th vintage of Abadal Picapoll at the winery in an event attended by local restaurateurs, as well as Carles Playà, President of the Pla de Bages Designation of Origin, and representatives of the Bages Hospitality and Tourism Guild and the Confraria de Vins del Bages. The event celebrated three decades of work devoted to a grape variety deeply rooted in Bages, while bringing together gastronomy professionals to reflect on a journey built on knowledge, perseverance and a strong sense of place.
The 2025 vintage of Abadal Picapoll marks the thirtieth vintage of a wine that, over the years, has become one of the wines most closely associated with the recognition and promotion of Picapoll, both within and beyond the region. This milestone symbolizes three decades of commitment to a historic grape variety and to an interpretation that remains faithful to its identity. Throughout this time, the winery has helped preserve its heritage, deepen knowledge of the variety and strengthen its standing within the Catalan wine landscape.
Research and experimentation have been central to this journey. Initially through experimental trials and blends with other varieties, and later through a wine made exclusively from Picapoll. This work has enabled a deeper understanding of the grape’s behaviour in the vineyard, its adaptation to the estate’s diverse soils and microclimates, and the characteristics that define its personality.
Faithful to the essence of the variety, Abadal Picapoll has retained the qualities that have defined it from the very beginning — freshness, authenticity and elegance.
Produced from separately vinified vineyard parcels, the wine combines the volume, structure and minerality of the estate’s higher-elevation sites with the freshness, elegance, acidity and fruit expression of the valley plots, resulting in a broad, balanced wine with a distinctive personality.
Ageing on its lees for approximately three months adds texture and complexity. As a new feature of the 2025 vintage, 10% of the wine is aged in oak barrels for three months, bringing additional depth to the blend while preserving the characteristic style that has defined Abadal Picapoll for three decades.
The celebration also recognized the role of the restaurateurs, wine professionals and ambassadors who have accompanied this journey and helped bring Picapoll to consumers’ tables. Their trust has been instrumental in consolidating the path of a wine that today forms part of the recent history of Bages and the contemporary projection of Catalonia’s native grape varieties.
With this commemoration, Abadal celebrates not only the 30 vintages of a wine, but also decades of dedication to a grape variety that forms part of the winegrowing identity of Bages and continues to inspire the winery’s vision for the future.
